Define Normal?

Hello Hatters,

Many years ago, my sister and I went to a fun play, The Addams Family. We’d grown up watching that series on TV. One of the best lines in the script was “Definite normal!” It was so funny. It’s in the same kind of realm as a garage sale slogan that I like, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure!”

We’re definitely not normal right now. No one can claim that status. Things will never be normal again. We’re at war with a pandemic and the cost is high. We’re in chaos with anger all around us and no end in sight. None of us will forget the year 2020.

Closer to home, Country Hubby’s illness presents anything but normal. He is reaching out with all the love he has to offer; family members visit for support and we’re cherishing every possible moment. No one knows his final hour and so each day is a gift. He is the rock that is losing strength in the physical but gaining such a depth in his prayers. He prays for his family’s needs and for the healing of the country he loves.

I find comfort in the loving thanks he gives for his blessings. His heart shines a purity that knows where he’s going and a confidence in the Lord’s care of the rest of us. At times, he expresses sadness about leaving us behind, but I just keep telling him that we’re here. Now is what we have.

The hard walk shows clarity about what’s important and if there’s anything I can do to share that focus, I will do so. Open our heart and mind to the truly important people in our world. De-clutter the frivolous and unnecessary junk that traps our best self.

The most appropriate phrase I’ve heard lately is not a new normal but a “new reality.” There’s a hope in those two words. There’s potential for healing. We have important choices every day to serve, encourage and love others. Those efforts enrich our lives beyond measure. too.

Defining normal? Not possible! Discover the meaningful, yes, definitely. May we answer the call and the search for each day’s purpose. That’s a new reality worth pursuing.

Hugzzzzz,

MT Penny
