Hello Hatters,
I have often written as one who wears many hats. The hat collection may include the role of being a child, sibling, friend, spouse, employee, coworker, boss, parent, and grandparent. Other important services we provide are care taker, taxi driver, cheerleader, team member, negotiator, cook, baker, and sometimes a reluctant agent of cleaning and laundry. Sometimes, we must seek help from others and we become a patient or a client. Our capacity to wear some or all of these hats has long fascinated me. We move between them without blinking an eye, yet not without consequence. While my effort to bring forth this hat list isn’t complete, you get the idea of the complexity of the many hats we wear.
If you reread this list, you may realize why exhaustion is so prevalent. Our much needed sleep can be elusive as we mull over our responsibilities. Sometimes, pain and/or medications keep us restless even when our bodies need much resting.
In my last three decades, being a woman of faith in Jesus is more important and necessary than any other hat. Sometimes my faith hat is rattled by the weather, and I’m not talking about wind or rain. Troubles or doubts can can try to topple my beliefs. Circumstances challenge me. If I try to adjust my faith hat by myself, 20 hat pins of my own making won’t keep it on straight. Only by surrender, do I flourish. The upside down, Jesus way is to relinquish control to the One who actually holds it anyway. His Will be Done.
There’s beauty in the scripture about God’s power being made perfect in my weakness, as found in 2nd Corinthians 12:9.
“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
So how is my faith hat maintained? I’ll ask some questions that may provide insights. Do you like fresh flowers? How about fresh fruit? Do you enjoy a freshly baked dessert or a homemade meal with farm fresh ingredients? My friends who grew up around the country tell me that a freshly picked cotton field carries a fresh scent. This city chick doesn’t know much about that, but I’ll take them at their word. Freshness brings a sigh, “ Ahhhh!” We all need freshness.
In my faith walk, I have recently been very inspired by the word REFRESH. I need lots of re-re-re-refreshing every day. I have to sit quietly and ask that the Lord to breathe on me. I know that scripture, prayer, and fellowship provide wisdom and encouragement. Day by day, even moment by moment, I need to be refreshed.
So, I’ll add one more hat to the list, a seeker hat. As I recognize my need for the Lord’s freshness, by God’s grace, may I seek His presence and guidance.
Seek the Lord.
Refresh.
Repeat.
Seek the Lord.
Re-refresh.
Re-repeat.
What about you? What helps you wear many hats?
