It’s Cold Outside

Hello Hatter,

Unusually cold weather hit the city and everyone is talking about it. It’s the timing, I suppose. The temperature is lower than this time last year. But memories are short because in 2017, it had already snowed. Now then, snow is unusual around here.

The wonder of the human condition is that we’re never really satisfied with outside conditions. When it is hot, we want a cool breeze. When it is cold, we want the warmth of a fireplace or the comfort of a favorite blanket or coat.

My hat for today is discoverer. I wish to discover the internal weather conditions of my heart and yours. Are our hearts all warm and toasty with the holidays just around the corner? Maybe that’s a stretch, and our souls are a little more frosty than jolly. It could be that the weather inside us fluctuates from moment to moment.

The exercise of checking our hearts is a worthwhile journey. Discovery of where we are, how we’re feeling, and what we’re thinking about is necessary for this discovery voyage. I invite you and myself to slow down long enough to evaluate the temperature of the heart. If we have a burden that is detected, perhaps we could use a friend’s help. Take a few minutes and reach out. If the roles were reversed, I’m sure we’d welcome a chance to lend a helping hand and sharing heart for a friend.

It is not easy to honestly access how we’re really doing. Right? Sometimes I’m merely on autopilot and going through the motions of life. Do you? Whatever emotional state for which we find ourselves, let’s first of all, be honest about it and second of all, let’s see where the discovery journey needs to take us. Lastly, if we should take some kind of action to improve the weather inside, let’s press forward into progress.

I will say that for me, I need more stillness than movement in my internal weather conditions. A calm from within makes discovery more authentic. Sincere searches of my heart’s who, what, when, where, why and how take time. The investment of time for discovery is worthy of priority.
