Lessons from the Road

Hello Hatters,

Go West!  Yes, thanks to the arrangements of a dear friend, we took a trip to Big Bend National Park and surrounding areas.  The views were amazing. The drive kept the mountains in the distance for hours.  The high winds threatened to move us off the road.  Tumbleweeds raced across our paths and clouds of sand swept up with the wind.

Driving up and down the various elevations provided several roller coaster ride sensations.  The curves were a different story; I slowed down!  By the way, there are not many guardrails.  Alertness and caution were a must for this street driving city chick.

It was so worth the effort!  Springtime flowers brought hues of yellow, purple, orange, blue and red.  It’s a different kind of beauty, the desert.  Cactus greeted us with odd shapes and sizes.  In some areas there were no trees, only bushes.

My favorite sight was the stars at night.  The magnificent view kept me in wonder.  No light or noise pollution spoiled the experience.  I only remember a handful of times in my life when I saw the heavens so clearly.  It was awesome.

The trip was a good reminder of how to travel in life for this writer who wears many hats. A quick list of lessons from the road:

Laugh a lot and count your blessings.

Enjoy friends and good food.

Sometimes, you have to wait for the mountains.

Slow down on the turns.

Don’t get caught up in the tumbleweeds.

Stand firm in the wind.

Look, but don’t touch the cactus.

Watch for the flowers and look up at the heavens.

God is good!

Until next time,

MT Penny
