Sober

Hello friends,
On my way to a church function, I was stopped by a red light. At that corner, I was approached by a man with the donation bucket. He had a big smile, and so I rolled down my window. He proclaimed loudly, “I am sober and I am saved!” I responded, “Hallelujah!”
He was collecting donations for a restorative program for addicts and alcoholics. After I gave him a donation, he asked me, “Where are you going all dressed up?” “I am going to church with a friend who recently lost her husband. There’s a grief meeting for those who have lost a spouse. I know about that sorrow, so I’m helping her,” I replied.
He exclaimed, “The Lord says, ‘Be strong and courageous, dear woman of God!’”
Yes, indeed. In many places, the Bible tells us to stand, do not fear, and take heart. Be bold and courageous. All these abilities are because God is always with us and He is for us.
This encounter was brief but powerful. Being sober not only means being free from alcohol. It also means being serious or straightforward, as in taking a sober look at one’s life. For me, I’m always on the hunt for my next lesson in life. I see them everywhere.
The sober and saved man on the corner reminded me that joy can also live in sober moments. I could tell he felt free. His countenance bubbled happiness from his mouth to my soul. It was a blessing to receive this encouragement before the difficult program of grief share which was waiting for me and my friend.
I pray for my friend on the corner. It was a quick and unexpected moment for which I won’t forget. While he pursues sobriety, may I take stock of my own life in a sober manner. It’s worth the effort.
